A few weeks ago we had the privilege of staying at Mitchelton Winery, in their incredible new boutique hotel. A grown-up girls get away (blissfully child free!), where we were looking to relax, indulge in a little pampering, wining and dining but mostly just escape the Summer city for a few days. It was an experience so sublime we felt compelled to share it....
A quick ninety minutes from Melbourne and you’re peeling down a long driveway, flanked by rows of vines. An idyllic scene of rural beauty that gives way to an almost Palm Springs vibe, with minimally chic architecture and one crazy beautiful swimming pool, greeting you on arrival.
The architectural history of Mitchelton reads as a unique narrative. The building and tower having been originally conceived by Robin Boyd, before being completed by Ted Ashton (in 1974) and finally, thoughtfully re-imagined by Hecker Guthrie in 2011. The jewel in the crown being the extraordinary tower that sits high over the estate, offering unbelievable views of the surrounding countryside and sparkling river below.
Each structure sits as an arresting slice of minimalism amongst such a lush natural landscape, with the outlook from each of the hotel’s rooms, pool and restaurant all framing views of the Goulburn River and vineyards. A kind of slow moving painting that shape shifted colours in different light, throughout the day.
Checking in to the boutique hotel, we stayed in the suites - which were in a word, heaven. Cool and contemporary, filled with natural materials and finishes, each of the rooms were achingly chic but most importantly, calm and supremely comfortable. We had one of our best nights sleep in the luxurious beds, surrounded by such tranquil materials and sophisticated colours conducive to a serene state of mind.
Between the giant bathtub (housed in a truly giant bathroom), the soft bed linens and even softer robes...it was the kind of boutique experience that begs you to unwind from the moment you step foot inside. A mood of understated luxury - the uncomplicated kind - that allows you to relax deeply and completely. We soon started fantasising about moving in.
Wandering the grounds, it wasn’t long before we were envisaging all kinds of weddings unfolding throughout the various spaces here. The photographer in each of us not quite able to switch off our brains to the infinite possibilities at such a photogenic location. As a venue, it is truly spectacular, and the juxtaposition of bold architectural lines against such a striking natural backdrop, is our special kind of heaven.
Making the most of the restaurant (open every day / for all meals) we feasted on local produce (dishes change seasonally) and relished the matching wines, glasses of which can also be ordered to your room. We reasoned, it would be rude not to partake in this service, when staying at a winery, with a bathtub that big...The idea of accomodating all your family and friends at such a spectacular location, on site, for a wedding is obviously appealing, and perfect as a ’destination wedding’ from Melbourne.
Logistically effortless (a short drive) but far enough away to feel a million miles from the CBD, it would allow guests to spend quality time together before and after the day, lingering for the weekend, exploring the surrounding country playground - or simply relaxing by the pool.
An epic wedding destination aside, it also struck us as the perfect bachelorette weekend away, with a day spa on site (perfect for squad pampering), followed by pool lounging, long lunches and delicious dinners, before each retreating to a dreamy room for the night, with nowhere to be but there.
We’re already plotting of our return, perhaps a day trip for some wine tasting and a luxuriously unhurried lunch (until we can carve out time time for a longer stay).
Mitchelton Winery is available for Weddings and private events, ranging in size from intimate gatherings to several hundred people. The Mitchelton hotel has 58 rooms, complete with a heavenly day spa and a giant infinity pool. Explore everything a little more on their mitchelton.com.au.
