It’s no secret we love fashion, bridal or otherwise. Shooting the breathtaking gowns of our real brides is an undoubted highlight of this thing we call work. So naturally, we jumped at the chance to head backstage (where all the candid magic happens) last weekend, at Melbourne’s One Fine Day wedding fair, excited to get up close with the creations of so many talented designers.
As the outfit you’ll be photographed in more than any other - an exceptional bridal designer will consider that transformative power of the gown, ensuring it shoots beautifully from every angle. And as a woman slips from her everyday attire into her wedding dress, we notice a transformation not only of outfit, but subtly, of personality too. Like slipping into an imperceptibly altered, alter ego. And this is the part we love most. Capturing not only the dress design and detail or movement of fabric, but documenting how the woman feels when she’s wearing it. An embodiment of her best, most beautiful self.
So like a macro gathering of a dozen brides, backstage, we observed (David Attenborough style) models slipping in an out of different dresses and different personalities. Their attitude, their posture, their gait…almost imperceptibly changed with each dress change. Shifting gears from sassy to serene to playful to ethereal - such is the power of an incredible dress. The ability to draw different women, from the same woman.
Explore our behind the scenes peek below, from seventies sirens to sequinned goddesses, ethereal tulle to jaw-dropping lace, this diverse and beautiful collection of designs from half a dozen different designers, speaks to dozens of different women. Maybe your dream dress is hiding amongst them…
